Seven Sisters Cliffs from Central London by Public Transport

Disclaimer: Backdated post. This trip was last summer days after the first lockdown in the UK was lifted.

We were looking for just a day hike from central London so the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs is a perfect choice because it’s just around 2 hours by train. Based on our online research and hassling our friends who had been there, we gathered there are different ways to go there based on the level of activity you’re after.

  • Long hike, walking the trail from Seaford Station to Eastbourne Pier or vice versa, takes about 6 hours more or less depending on how fast and how much break you’re getting

Click the link for a YouTube video of my friends (VanJing Together Seven Sisters Vlog) who took this route. You’ll get tips here where they started, the seven cliffs, an idea or a picture of how’s the trail, and points of reference for photos if you want to have a full picture of the range of cliffs.

  • Short hike, from central London, you may take the train to Eastbourne, or in our case, we took the train to Brighton (Thameslink, from London Blackfriars), and from either of these towns, you can catch the bus 12X or 12A to Seven Sisters Country Park. It’s just around 30 minutes bus ride from Eastbourne, meanwhile, it’s an hour from Brighton with 12X (less stops) and add a few more minutes if taking 12A (more stops). What we did is just walk from the main road to Cuckmere Haven (the beach) via the Cuckmere River, and climbed just that cliff there then back to the Seven Sisters Country Park bus stop. It’s 30 minutes to an hour of walking.

We had brunch at Brighton before going for the walk.

All of us were in our dressy outfits except for one so we went for a quick shopping for her so she won’t be left out. You will see later on we dressed up for pictures and not appropriately for hiking.

We wanted to dip into the water but we’re all in our shoes. That didn’t stop us though from being barefoot on the rocky shore of Cuckmere Haven. There was a lot of ouches though.

If you have watched the video, and as you can see in these series of photos, the chalky path surrounded by the greenery is the short cut climbing up the top. Vanjing didn’t take that route and instead walked around the hilly part of the cliff from the beach. It was steep but despite us wearing dresses, we chose to climb that way. We survived.

Chalk all over my legs, which meant I crawled my way up

We took the downhill trail instead of the steep chalky path going down mostly because of me being the lamest of all. I was afraid to slide down.

We took the bus back to Brighton, had some dinner, before heading back to London.
